I am happy to report that things have been going well for me thus far this year. I decided to do a little catching up on things on our trip to Jackson, Miss., and among the list of things to do was update all my fans on the latest happenings in my world.
I last wrote after my first two runs in Denver and as I am sure you have read or heard by now, I came back in the final round and stopped the clock in 3.5 seconds to capture the round victory and the overall average title with a three-head total of 10.6 seconds. When it was all said and done, I left the Mile High City with just under $16,000. Not bad considering I haven’t placed at that rodeo since my rookie year. People ask me what was different this year and I think it was a number of things. I rode Curtis Cassidy’s horse Willie and he scored well on every steer. I drew some really good steers and I took care of things on my end, making it all come together. It is always good to get a big win in January as it gives you momentum going into the other big winter rodeos like San Antonio and Houston.
After Denver, I headed back to California and then drove to Ft. Worth for my second steer there on Feb. 3. I broke the barrier, which cost me making it back to the finals later that day. So one good and one bad I guess. From Ft. Worth we headed out to Jackson, Miss., where we just arrived into town in time to get ready for slack. From Jackson, we will head to San Antonio for our three rounds down there Feb. 10-12. I am hoping for a repeat of Denver down there and hope to take home lots of cash.
I plan on riding Willie in Jackson and then in San Antonio and San Angelo. The plan right now is to ride the gray horse, Skids, in Tucson. It is nice to have such great horses to compete on. Our traveling group has been doing pretty good but now we just need to get the champ, Jason Miller, to the pay window. Hopefully, here in Jackson we can make that happen.
Other than that I have been fighting a head cold this week but I am hoping the warmer weather down here in the south will be the cure. All I know is it is no fun feeling like your head is going to explode. So here is hoping for healthier days and many more visits to the pay window. I hope to update you after San Antonio.
Until next time,
Luke
