May 2009

May 12, 2009

I figured it was time for me to take a minute and write an update to let you know what has been going on. Since I last wrote in, I won the steer wrestling title at the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Pocatello, Idaho, and a one-year lease on a brand new Dodge truck (still waiting to actually get this but hope it will be coming soon). My brother, Casey, won the tie-down roping title there a few years ago but I had never had the luxury of being in the winner’s circle there. Having been there now, it felt great and that is a wonderful event. The committee does a great job and I appreciate all the sponsors especially Dodge for making that event possible.

The rest of April wasn’t great but it wasn’t bad either. I placed along the way at most of the rodeos, not winning big but every little bit counts in our sport. I did win the all-around title at the Lakeside (Calif.) Rodeo after winning the steer wrestling average title, edging one of my traveling partners Billy Bugenig. I also won fourth in the average in the team roping with my partner Jody Carper. It was fun to do a little roping and to pick up some checks was a definite bonus.

The first part of May, I went to the Guymon (Okla.) Pioneer Days Rodeo but didn’t have any luck whatsoever. That is usually my luck there though, so I wasn’t too surprised. I have been home for the last few weeks, which has been great as I have been able to spend lots of time with my son Cade. Last night, he tried to take 3-4 steps but then went back to crawling, which he does quite well. I am sure in a week or so he will have figured out the walking thing and will be going everywhere. That is when we will have our work cut out for us.

It is great to see my traveling partner Curtis Cassidy’s name at the top of the most recent PRCA World All-Around Standings. He is having a great year. There is still a lot of rodeo left but it is cool to see him atop the list.

As I said, there is still a lot of rodeo left and the summer run of rodeos is quickly approaching. I am looking forward to this summer and hopefully winning a lot of money creeping closer to the No. 1 spot in the steer wrestling world standings. I have updated my schedule with the events I will be heading to next, so be sure to check that out.

Well I better get back to the practice pen, so until next time,

Luke

Two-time and reigning PRCA World Champion Steer Wrestler
